SBDC Dress Code Requirements

The Importance of correctly fitting dance shoes

In order to prevent injury and promote correct technique it is very important that all dance shoes fit securely on the dancers feet. Oversized shoes do not allow students to perform the movements correctly and could possibly cause the students to trip and injure themselves. One thumb-width of growing room is allowable at the beginning of the year. Shoes must fit the student correctly when entering an exam and growing room is NEVER acceptable in pointe shoes. Any dance shoes that are too small can damage a student's foot by cramping muscles and putting excess pressure on the small joints of the foot and will often cause blisters and irratation for the student. Parents should check in with their child periodically to see how their shoes are fitting. Shoes must also not have any holes in them, especially on stage and for exams. Canvas ballet shoes may easily be darned at the first signs of holes for longer lifespan. It is also important that students wear shoes specifically designed for dance, while many stores offer shoes that closely resemble dance shoes they do not offer the correct support or shape for a dance class.

The importance of following the dresscode and arriving on time

A large part of dance training is the discipline that students learn in class and then carry with them throughout their lives. This discipline begins by arriving in class on time with the proper attire and hairstyle. By arriving in this manner students are better mentally prepared to focus on the task at hand and in return receive the maximum benefit from their dance classes. Also as an instructor it is much easier to assess and correct a student's technique and physicality (i.e. their posture and placement) in a bodysuit and tights. When working on choreography it is much easier to clean the small details of a dance when students are all wearing the same attire and students and intructors are not being distracted by fly-away hairs of dangling jewelry. Students that arrive late to class miss the important warm-ups at the beginning of class that help reduce the risk of injury and also disrupt the other students in class. At the instructor's discretion, students that arrive more than 10 minutes lat may not be allowed to participate in class that day.

Hair requirements

Hair is to be pulled off the face for ALL dance classes, no exceptions. For all ballet, jazz, tap and minicompany classes, hair should be in a ballet bun, with long bangs clipped back. Bangs that fall above the eyebrows may be left down in class but must be pulled back for exams, workshops and performances. Students should not have their hair in a ballet bun for hip hop, musical theatre (with the exception of Primary) or junior, intermediate and senior company classes. Dancers in mini-steps, preprimary and combination 1 do not need a ballet bun for class, though hair should be pulled back in a ponytail or braid.

Jewelry

All students must remove all of their jewelry for all dance classes. Small stud earrings and medial alert bracelets/necklaces will be allowed in class, but not on stage or in exams.

Exams - Classes marked with an asterisk (*) will not be involved in exams for the 2009/10 season.

Dresscode Requirements for SBDC Senior Company Students

Ballet Classes - Any colour bodysuit, except for Senior Ballet class Thursdays7:50pm when students MUST wear their dark teal bodysuit. Ballerina pink tights, pink Sansha ballet slippers and pointe shoes. Hair in a classical bun (no bangs!)

Tap/Jazz Classes - Any colour bodysuit, and colour tights. Dance shorts or capris may be worn. Hair in a bun.

Ballet Exams - Dark Teal bodysuit, bloch brand ballerina tights, Sansha ballet slippers. Hair in a classical bun (no bangs!)

Jazz Exams - Dark Teal bodysuit, black dance tights, black jazz shoes. Hair in a classical bun (no bangs!)

Tap Exams- Dark Teal bodysuit, black tights for ADAPT exams, ballerina pink tights and capris for Al Gilbert exams. Hair in a classical bun (no bangs!)

Senior Company Ballet ( Sat 1:00) - Any colour bodysuit, any colour tights, ballet slipper and pointe shoes. Leg warmers, dance shorts, skirts may also be worn. Hair must be pulled off the face and neck. NO PONY TAILS and NO BANGS!! Braids, French Twists and messy buns are acceptable on Saturdays ONLY!

Senior Company Jazz/Tap (3:30) - Any dance clothes! Hair off the face. Students should bring jazz shoes, food undeez, character shoes and tap shoes each week.

Senior Company Students will be require to purchase a dancewear kil for $100 containing:

  • 1 pair of black cahracter shoes
  • 1 pair of "Foot Undeez" (for dancing barefoot)
  • 1 Dark Teal bodysuit
  • 1 Mallot (Beige bodysuit to be worn under costumes)
  • 1 pair of Ballerina Pink Bloch Tights (to be saved for performance and exams)
  • 1 pair of Beige Shimmer Tights ( to be saved for performance)

This kit must be purchased during Boutique hours in August. Students may also order any other dance items at this time.
