We offer classes for a variety of ages, including beginner programs for young dancers starting at 2 years of age. Class placement depends on your child’s age, experience, and comfort level.
No. Many of our classes are beginner-friendly. We welcome dancers who are brand new, as well as dancers with previous training.
Class placement is usually based on age, experience, and dance style. As we offer many different levels and names to the classes, we understand that it can be confusing and overwhelming, but we are here to help. If you are unsure, contact us and we will be happy to recommend the best fit.
We offer a variety of dance styles, which include ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, acro, musical theatre, pointe and preschool dance. Check out our different programs for more information.
Dress code depends on the class style. In general, dancers should wear comfortable, fitted clothing that allows them to move safely. Specific shoe and attire requirements are available within the dress code policy.
For many classes, proper dance shoes are recommended for safety and technique. New dancers may be able to attend their first class before purchasing shoes, but we encourage families to check the class dress code and obtain the appropriate footwear as soon as possible.
To help dancers stay focused, build independence, and gain confidence in the studio, regular classes are typically closed to parents. However, each studio has observation windows where parents can quietly check in and watch their dancer from outside the classroom.
We kindly ask that parents use the observation windows in a way that does not distract their dancer or interrupt the class. If a dancer becomes distracted, upset, or has difficulty focusing when they see a parent watching, we may ask families to step away from the window to help the dancer re-engage with the class.
We also offer parent observation weeks during the first week of classes in September, and again during the first weeks of December and February.
That is completely normal. Our teachers work to create a welcoming, supportive environment where dancers can build confidence at their own pace.
Trial classes may be available depending on the program and space in the class. Contact us to ask about current trial class options.
Registration dates vary by season, and updates will be posted on our website and social media. Families are also welcome to contact us directly to ask about current class availability.
For our regular dance season beginning in the fall, registration will remain open until October 15, as long as space is available in the class. After October 15, registration for regular season classes will close so dancers and teachers can continue progressing together with consistent class structure and choreography.
Short-term programs, workshops, adult classes, or specialty sessions may have different registration timelines depending on the schedule.
Our regular season programs run from early September through to our spring recital. These classes are designed to give dancers a full season of training, allowing them to build technique, confidence, choreography, and performance skills throughout the year.
Dancers in regular season classes will work toward participating in our spring recital, where they have the opportunity to celebrate their progress and perform for family and friends.
We may also offer short-term programs, workshops, adult classes, or specialty sessions throughout the year. These programs may run on different schedules and do not include a recital performance.
Consistent attendance is important for all dancers and helps support steady progress, confidence, and class preparation throughout the season. Regular attendance is especially important when dancers are preparing for exams, festivals, competitions, and the spring recital, as choreography, formations, and technique are built on week by week.
If a dancer is unable to attend class due to illness, injury, or another reason, families are asked to notify the instructor as soon as possible. This helps the teacher stay informed and support the dancer appropriately when they return.
If a dancer is injured but still able to safely attend, we encourage them to come and observe class when possible. Watching class allows dancers to keep up with choreography, corrections, and important information while respecting their physical limitations.
After three consecutive absences, the instructor may contact the family to check in and discuss the dancer’s progress and participation. Participation in exams, festivals, competitions, or the recital may be affected by ongoing absences and will be at the discretion of the instructor.
Yes! Being part of a competitive dance team is an exciting opportunity for dancers who are ready to challenge themselves, grow their skills, and take their training to the next level. Competitive dance gives students the chance to train with greater focus, learn more advanced choreography, and develop strong technique, confidence, discipline, and performance quality.
Dancers on a competitive team learn much more than steps. They build teamwork, commitment, responsibility, resilience, and confidence as they work together toward shared goals. Through rehearsals, performances, and competitions, dancers learn how to push themselves, support their teammates, receive feedback, and continue improving both in and out of the studio.
Competitions also give dancers valuable stage experience and the opportunity to perform in front of judges, audiences, and other dancers. This helps them grow as performers, gain confidence under pressure, and celebrate their hard work in a fun and inspiring environment.
A competitive dance team is a great fit for dancers who love to perform, enjoy working hard, and are excited to be part of a dedicated and supportive group. It is a rewarding experience that helps dancers build lasting friendships, create special memories, and discover what they are capable of achieving through dedication and passion.

Yes! Most regular season classes participate in a year-end recital, giving dancers the exciting opportunity to celebrate their hard work, growth, and progress from throughout the season.
A recital is a special performance where dancers get to showcase what they have learned in class for family and friends. It helps students build confidence, stage presence, teamwork, and performance skills while creating a memorable experience to end the dance year.
Our studio holds two recitals each season:
Shining Stars Recital
Held toward the end of April or early May, this recital features our younger dancers. It is designed to give our youngest performers a positive and age-appropriate stage experience where they can shine and celebrate all they have learned.
Dare to Dance Recital
Held toward the end of May or early June, this recital features our older dancers. This performance highlights the technique, artistry, and choreography students have worked on throughout the year.
Recital participation allows dancers to experience the joy of performing, celebrate their accomplishments, and share their love of dance with the people who support them most.
Yes. For performance classes, costumes are required for recitals and competitions. Costumes are an important part of the performance experience because they help bring the choreography, music, style, and overall theme of each dance to life on stage.
Costumes also help create a polished and unified look for the class, allowing dancers to feel confident and connected as a group while performing. For younger dancers especially, wearing a costume can make recital day feel exciting and special, and helps them fully experience the joy of performing.
Costume fees, deadlines, sizing information, and other important details will be shared with families in advance. Families are encouraged to follow all costume and accessory instructions carefully so each dancer is prepared and the group looks consistent on stage.
Yes! We offer a Stoney Brook Dance Company merchandise sale in the fall each season. The online store is typically open for one week only, and families will receive information by email when the sale becomes available.
Orders are placed during the fall sale period and usually arrive in late fall. Merchandise is a great way for dancers and families to show their studio spirit, and items may include things like clothing, dancewear, bags, or other studio-branded apparel depending on the options available that season.
Because the merchandise sale is only offered once per season, families are encouraged to place their orders before the deadline. If the sale is missed, families will need to wait until the next dance season’s merchandise sale to order.
Tuition depends on the class, program length, number of classes taken, and whether the class is part of our regular season, a short-term session, or a specialty program. Please visit our registration page or view our price list for the most up-to-date tuition information.
In addition to tuition, some classes may have extra costs throughout the season. These may include costume fees for recital, festival or competition routines, recital fees, competition fees, required dance shoes, tights, class attire, or other performance-related items.
Costume fees are required for dancers participating in recitals or competitions, as costumes help create a polished and unified look for each performance. Families will receive information about costume costs, payment deadlines, and any additional required items in advance.
We do our best to communicate all fees clearly so families know what to expect before important deadlines.
Payment options include e-transfer, credit card, cheque, debit, cash, or automatic payments.
As Stoney Brook Dance Company is a nonprofit organization, any transaction fees associated with credit card or debit payments will be added to the total amount owing. Families may choose an alternative payment method, such as e-transfer, cheque, cash, or automatic payments, to avoid these additional processing fees. Click here to view our payment policy.
Yes. We understand that dance fees can be a significant expense for families, and we do our best to offer flexible payment options whenever possible.
Payment plan options may be available for regular season tuition and other eligible studio fees. These plans allow families to spread payments out over the dance season rather than paying the full amount at once. Payment schedules, due dates, and available options will be shared during registration or by contacting the studio directly.
To help the studio operate smoothly and continue offering quality programming, families are expected to keep payments up to date according to the payment plan or fee schedule selected. Late or missed payments may affect a dancer’s ability to participate in classes, exams, competitions, recitals, or other studio events until the account is brought up to date.
Additional costs, such as costume fees, recital fees, competition fees, merchandise, dress code attire, or dance shoes, may have separate deadlines and may not always be included in regular tuition payment plans.
Families experiencing financial difficulty are encouraged to contact the studio as early as possible. As a not-for-profit studio, we value communication and will do our best to share available options, including fundraising opportunities, credit hour opportunities, payment plans, or external funding resources that may help support the cost of dance.
We understand that the cost of dance can be a barrier for many families, and we believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience the joy, confidence, creativity, and community that dance can provide. As a not-for-profit studio, we are committed to making dance as accessible as possible while continuing to offer quality instruction and meaningful programming for our dancers.
Throughout the year, families may have opportunities to help reduce the cost of dance through individual fundraising options and credit hour opportunities. These programs are designed to support families by helping offset expenses such as tuition, costume fees, recital costs, or other dance-related fees.
We also encourage families to explore external agencies and community programs that may offer financial assistance for children’s activities. Some organizations may be able to help with the cost of tuition, dress code attire, dance shoes, or other required items. Some organizations we encourage you to explore include:
Our goal is to work alongside families wherever possible so that more children can participate, grow, and feel included in the studio community. Families who have questions about available opportunities are encouraged to contact us for more information.
Manitoba families may be able to claim eligible children’s dance fees through the provincial Fitness Tax Credit and/or Children’s Arts and Cultural Activity Tax Credit. Depending on the program, eligible registration fees may qualify as a fitness activity, an arts and cultural activity, or a combination of distinct eligible programs.
Withdrawal and cancellation policies vary by program. Please review our studio policies or contact us before registering if you have questions.
We do! These classes are a great way to move, learn, and enjoy dance in a fun and supportive environment. Get more information on our adult classes here.
Private lessons may be available for dancers looking for extra support, solo preparation, exam work, or technique training. Availability depends on studio and teacher availability. Additional fees would apply.
Important studio updates are usually sent by email and/or text message, and may also be posted through the studio website, monthly newsletter or social media. Please make sure your contact information stays up to date.
If classes are cancelled due to weather or unsafe travel conditions, families will be notified as soon as possible through the studio’s usual communication channels. Click here to view our studio weather closure/teacher illness cancellation policy.
Yes! Dance classes for young children are designed to be age-appropriate, safe, and developmentally supportive. Our teachers focus on movement activities that are suitable for each age group, helping dancers learn in a way that is fun, encouraging, and safe for growing bodies.
Young dancers are introduced to basic movement skills such as balance, coordination, rhythm, flexibility, spatial awareness, and body control. Classes may include warm-ups, creative movement, stretching, simple dance steps, music activities, and games that help children move confidently and safely.
Dance is not only safe for young children when taught properly, but also highly beneficial. It helps children develop gross motor skills, coordination, listening skills, confidence, creativity, social skills, and independence. Dance also encourages children to follow instructions, take turns, work with others, and express themselves through movement and music.
Our classes are taught in a positive and supportive environment where children can build confidence, explore creativity, and develop a love of movement while learning safe dance habits from the very beginning.
Our studio is committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment where every dancer feels valued, encouraged, and inspired. We believe that dance is for everyone, and we strive to create a space where students of all ages, levels, and abilities can feel confident being themselves while learning and growing.
At the heart of our studio is a strong focus on quality dance training. Our classes are designed to help dancers build proper technique, strength, flexibility, musicality, coordination, and performance skills in a safe and age-appropriate way. Whether a dancer is just beginning or training at a more advanced level, we want each student to feel challenged, supported, and proud of their progress.
We also believe that dance should be fun. While strong technique and hard work are important, so are creativity, friendship, laughter, confidence, and the joy of movement. Our teachers work to create classes that are engaging, positive, and inspiring, helping dancers develop not only their skills, but also a lifelong love of dance.
What makes our studio special is the balance of strong training, meaningful encouragement, and a true sense of community. We want dancers to leave each class feeling stronger, more confident, and excited to come back.
olunteering is an important part of supporting our not-for-profit dance studio. Many of the events and opportunities we offer throughout the season, including recitals, competitions, fundraising events, and studio activities, rely on the help of our dance families and community members.
When families volunteer, they help our studio run smoothly while also creating a positive and supportive experience for our dancers. Volunteers may help backstage, assist with events, support fundraising efforts, organize costumes, help with setup or cleanup, or take on other important roles throughout the year.
Because we are a not-for-profit studio, volunteering helps reduce the overall cost of running programs and events. This allows us to continue offering quality dance training while keeping class fees as affordable as possible for families. Volunteering also helps build community, connection, and studio spirit, reminding dancers that they are part of something bigger than just their weekly class.
Fundraising plays a meaningful role in helping our not-for-profit dance studio continue to provide affordable and accessible dance opportunities for families. The costs of running a studio, including facility expenses, equipment, costumes, music licensing, recital costs, teacher training, and program resources, can add up quickly.
Fundraising helps offset some of these expenses so that we can keep tuition and program fees more affordable for families. It also supports improvements to the studio, special events, performance opportunities, scholarships or financial assistance, and resources that benefit all dancers.
By participating in fundraising, families help strengthen the studio community and make dance more accessible for everyone. Every fundraiser, big or small, helps us continue to offer quality programming in a welcoming and supportive environment while keeping the joy of dance within reach for more families.
What is the role of the Board of Directors?
As a not-for-profit dance studio, our Board of Directors helps guide the overall direction, sustainability, and operation of the organization. The Board is responsible for governance, financial oversight, policy development, fundraising support, long-term planning, and ensuring the studio continues to serve its dancers, families, and community in a responsible and accessible way.
The Board works behind the scenes to help make decisions that support the health and future of the studio. This may include reviewing budgets, supporting fundraising initiatives, maintaining policies, helping with community engagement, and ensuring the studio stays aligned with its mission and values. The Board does not typically make artistic or classroom decisions, but helps create the structure and support needed for the studio to operate successfully.
What is the role of the Artistic Director?
The Artistic Director oversees the creative, educational, and artistic direction of the dance studio. This role focuses on the quality of dance training, class programming, teaching standards, choreography, performances, exams, competitions, recital planning, and the overall dancer experience.
The Artistic Director makes decisions related to dance curriculum, class placement, instructor support, performance opportunities, artistic vision, and student development. They help ensure dancers are receiving strong technical training in a positive, age-appropriate, and inspiring environment.
How do they work together?
The Board of Directors and Artistic Director work together to support the success of the studio, but their roles are different. The Board focuses on governance, finances, policies, and long-term sustainability, while the Artistic Director focuses on dance education, programming, creativity, and artistic leadership.
Together, they help ensure the studio remains welcoming, well-run, financially responsible, and committed to providing quality dance opportunities for dancers and families.
